Leather pants or chaps?

I personally like chaps when its cold outside and I like how they look. But one of my friends hit a deer once and had his rear turned into hamburger while sliding down the road. I think pants are better for protection but get very warm in summer. Draggin jeans seem to be compromise to me. Fox Creek has some quality leather.
